Competition and Regulation Economics

This course runs for 2 days. Each day starts at 9.30 and runs to 4.30, with a 1-hour lunch break. The two days are intensive, but are broken up with various exercises, problems, classroom games, and case studies worked on in teams.

The structure of the two days is as follows:

Day 1
  • An overview of competition and regulation: a reminder of basic principles, and what happens when competition is absent (deadweight losses; benefits from innovation?)
  • Some of the latest developments - the New Empirical IO: how can the extent of competition in markets be measured accurately?
  • Measuring market power on the breakfast table: a detailed look at empirical work to assess competition in a particular market
  • Competition policy - how market power is dealt with: the practice of dealing with competition matters, in the UK and internationally
  • Information and incentives - contracts and regulation: the principles behind regulation and competition policy
Day 2
  • Industrial policy - making a comeback: the economic cases for industrial policy: why, where and how
  • Policy evaluation: how do we know whether it has worked
  • Topic 1 A reminder - what is a natural monopoly? Some important issues for network industries (e.g., power, rail, water)
  • Vertical relations - Chicago v. Harvard: should we worry about supplier-buyer relationships?
  • How to sell - the economics of auctions: designing markets to be competitive
  • Two-sided markets and chicken-and-egg problems: when non-competitive situations are not all that they appear
